Over 100 artists from across the globe have come together to celebrate the art of music videos, merging an innovative array of talent and vision into this one-of-a-kind tribute to nearly three decades of pop culture. Hosted at the Meltdown Gallery on Sunset Blvd., “I Want My Music Video Art Show” presented visual artists with an opportunity to take their favorite music videos from the 1980′s on, dip them in paint and various mediums, splash them onto canvases, lenses, tablets and computer screens, and create a new genre of art inspired by the idols who continue to groove and inspire us with musical genius.



With this phenomenal group show, Curators Chris Marrs Piliero and Dave MacDowell, both visual artists themselves, plunged into the vein that connects all areas and genres of modern music culture head on, racing toward the heart of what moves each of us from eardrums to foot-taps: our love of music and the presentation of these songs through creativity — by musicians using the camera as an instrument to turn us on and make us dance. Chris Marrs Piliero, a well-known Music Video Director for top names in the industry, and Dave MacDowell became close friends after Chris hired Dave to do an original painting to celebrate The Black Keys VMA win. The rest is history, and their collaboration here is a new and mind-blowing chapter in the artistic offerings their friendship has put together…

No holds barred visions of sensuality, humor, and interpersonal musings brought to vivid life in brush strokes and tablet swipes, from the traditional to the digital. The unifying fiber that binds the show together is simply a love of music, and the brilliant bands and musicians who took this love and morphed it into a passion through a unique expression that forever changed how we enjoy the art of sound and imagery.

Found: The Art of Discovery

Artwork which is based on or uses found photographs. Each of these paintings were taken from photographs in my archive that I have collected over the years.

My process for these paintings mimics photography in that a 'negative' is made by tracing the photograph onto Mylar (a clear, plastic film) and the image is projected onto the canvas.

Saturday, September 3rd, LA based Lunch Bunch will be holding a benefit at WWA gallery in Culver City to benefit what they do, with 100% of the proceeds going to provide lunches for the homeless in downtown Los Angeles. As they are dedicated and small, there are no admin costs, so the the money goes directly to food: $20 feeds 10 people!

The donated art in the show will also be sold only at the opening CASH AND CARRY style. Cash is preferred but we will also be able to accept paypal. You will not be able to take the artwork home until it is paid for. Unsold work will then be auctioned off on ebay afterwards. There will be no preview. If you're not in Los Angeles, send in a friend!

Please be understanding of the decision to make the artwork only available at the show. This will save Lunch Bunch on shipping costs and auction fees from ebay and paypal and maximize the amount of donation money that will go to feeding the homeless.

Chain Letter @ Shoshana Wayne Gallery with Girl Friend Beer

Chain Letter is a group exhibition based on admiration. Initially conceived by Christian Cummings and Doug Harvey in 2006, inclusion in the exhibition is based on invitation by someone who admires your work. Each artist invited then invites ten other artists whom they admire, and so on. Opening Saturday, July 23 from 6-8 pm.

I will present a series of boxes branded with the Girl Friend Beer logo and an image of Evelyn Nesbit, one of Hollywood's original "It" girls. Girl Friend Beer is an ongoing project in which there is not an actual product, just ephemera.

Moon Man Landing in Joshua Tree, CA

Made out of wood, canvas, paint, spray paint, some souped-up Converse Earth boots, an earth-grade fish bowl and a lot of duct tape, Ralph the Moon Man made his first visit to Earth to plant a moon flag in payback to the American flags planted on the moon. This photograph of the momentous event is evidence that this happened and a harbinger that it may happen again, at any time.

Moon Man Set to Land in Joshua Tree, Plant Flag

There are six American flags on the surface of the moon, one for every Apollo landing and base that was set up during the missions to the moon.

The original flag cost $5.50, presumably off a Hardware store shelf. The team who engineered it operated in secrecy, as planting a flag on the moon in the first place was a delicate issue: the United States was side-stepping its own international treaty which "bans the national appropriation of outer space or any celestial bodies."

The waviness in the flag is a result of the faulty telescoping rod on the top, which the flag was sewn around. The astronauts struggled with getting the rod to extend all they way (you can see this in the footage) but did the best they could, hence the ripples in the flag.

Because NASA wanted all of the flags to have a similar look, they engineered the following telescoping rods for each remaining flag to have this flaw, which gives the flag the appearance of waviness.

At this point, there is speculation that the flags are now either bleached white by the sun or possibly were destroyed during the lift off of the lunar module(s).
